La Quinceanera is also known as Mis Quince in many areas. This celebration marks the fifteenth birthday of a young Hispanic woman. Much like a mix between the Bat Mitzvah and a Sweet Sixteenth celebration this can be a very big event. Families are known to save up money long before the fifteenth birthday in order to make this the most lavish celebration ever. Lavish it can be, too. The Quinceanera can involve live bands, limousines, flowers, catered food, and lots of gifts. Its traditional for the young woman celebrating her fifteenth to pick out a very elegant ball gown dress for the occasion. She'll also carry a bouquet of flowers. The friends and family members will also dress up for the quinceanera, but the birthday girl can't be outshined by anyone.
La Quinceanera comes from the Spanish for the fifteenth birthday, and as mentioned before its commonly celebrated in Hispanic cultures in places like Mexico and South America. It's also a spiritual celebration for everyone involved with the party. A church service is held before the party where the pastor speaks about the importance of the Quinceanera tradition. The young woman speaks about her hopes and dreams for the future and her parents speak about their happiness for her and what she brought into their lives.
Of course after all this heartfelt, teary eyed honesty, its time to party. In old tradition the entire group follows the party girl through the town in parade formation to where the party takes place. Now, though its more likely to be a parade of cars. At the party the fifteen year old will have her traditional 'first' coed dance with a boy, signaling that she is growing up. Then others join her on the dance floor for some fun and possibly to earn some dance floor prizes.

1. Dust Off Your Little Black Dress - It is no secret that little black dresses are a must-have fashion staple, but this year they are back at the forefront of fashion. Last night I attended the party in the garden at MoMa, a very swanky and high-end event where M.I.A. performed and the entire garden of the museum was bedecked with lanterns and beautiful white tents. But the most fascinating part of this event was, of course, the fashion! I was the ultimate spectator at this proverbial runway of high fashion. Read on to see what New York City's elite were wearing at this red carpet event...
I saw plenty of classic black dresses, which are a sure bet when preparing for an event of this caliber. But what was truly fun was the amount of color I saw splayed throughout the garden. I mean, it's a garden party, so of course there should be color! I saw one woman wearing a beautiful sari-inspired floor-length gown with a bold magenta print infused with gold. I saw plenty of gold in gowns with cocktail and floor lengths. Several greek-style dresses with rope straps were scattered about and I even saw one woman in bright red pants, although I'm not sure I would recommend it. Fashion ranged from the oscar-style dressed up, to the pencil skirt and blouse. I must note that one of my favorites was a cocktail dress with a white, blue, orange, and gold-flecked print. Orange seemed to be a very popular color, and is usually complimentary with most skin-tones.
As far as accessories were concerned, I saw tons of layering and gold jewelry is a mega hit right now. For example, strapless dresses were matched with thick, chunky gold bead necklaces layered one on top of the other. Also, high-neck pencil-shaped dresses were also paired with a mix of long-and-short chains of matching colors and variety. Obviously, no need to be afraid of color, the more vibrant the better! Plus gold goes with pretty much anything, especially bright colors like deep purple, red, yellow, and hot pink.
Another thing I noticed was that an exact color match is not always necessary. One woman wore a grey-ish cocktail dress with bright royal blue Laboutin pumps, which were absolutely glorious. Another wore light blue and gold iridescent strappy sandals with a magenta and green print dress. Remember that colors don't have to be a perfect match, in order to match. Just make sure the combined colors are of the same color palette

There are still only a select group of online stores selling Plastic Island, but this brand is quickly becoming a fashion line not to miss. Plastic Island combines young trends with a sophisticated look that can't be replicated by other lines. It also has a very European sense of styling, making anyone who wears one of their pieces look like she paid much more for it than she actually did! The spring/summer collection of Plastic Island dresses are particularly impressive.
It's hard to pick one favorite Plastic Island dress, but if it's necessary, I would go with the Plastic Island Twist Back Dress. This dress is made of a unique shimmery fabric and it's done in a great shade of dark silver. It has an A-line/shapeless silhoutte, than looks great belted. But the most fun thing about this Plastic Island dress is the twisted back, that will have you turning heads when you enter and when you leave! It really is the perfect cocktail dress if you want to stand out a little bit, and a great alternative to the little black dress.
Another Plastic Island dress I have my eye on is the Bubble Hem Dress, which comes in a bright shade of royal blue, and is accented gray shoulders straps and a gray belt. It's almost done in a jumper style along with pleats on the skirt, and of course a bubble shaped skirt. And once again, Plastic Island is using a unique fabric;this dress in particular comes in almost a windbreaker like fabric, which makes it stand out from it's counterparts.
And I can't leave out the Plastic Island Bubble Dress! Yes, it's yet another bubble dress but it's quite different from the Bubble Hem Dress. This particular dress is made of a rayon/polyester blend, with white and gray stripes, with a bit of silver metallic thread woven in. But it certainly does have the trademarked Plastic Island unique details. Upon close look at the neckline, the fabric is twisted, and it's also twisted at the banded hem. Very cute!
If you're looking for a great cocktail dress that is anything but the norm, be sure to always check out the Plastic Island dress line first, and the Twist Back Dress, the Bubble Hem Dress, and the Bubble Dress are three diverse pieces from their line that will certainly get a lot of wear if they are a part of your wardrobe! The movie 27 Dresses starring Katherine Heigl tells the story of a woman who has difficulty saying no; consequently, she has been a bridesmaid on 27 different occasions, but never a bride. She has accumulated a closet full of bright, colorful bridesmaid dresses, which she just can't seem to throw away.
Though it is unlikely that you have accumulated as many dresses as this poor girl, you may have one or two gowns in your possession that you will never wear again, but which you would feel guilty throwing away. Why not turn one or all of them into costumes for your kids? A silk taffeta nightmare of a dress can be made into a beautiful ball gown for your little princess. I took a lovely blue dress (puffed sleeves, sweetheart neckline, fitted bodice - really, when was I ever going to wear that again?) and turned it into Cinderella's ball gown. A trip to the store provided a wand and tiara to match and some clear plastic sandals stood in for the glass slippers.
Another lovely handmade dress, this one yellow with lace trim, became Belle's gown from Beauty and the Beast. The same pattern worked for both dresses, with a few minor adjustments; the wand and tiara were still intact, and even the shoes still fit. Two unique, one of a kind Halloween costumes courtesy of two unused dresses hanging in my closet. And, not only did they work for Halloween, they were in constant use throughout the year by my daughter and her friends whenever they played dress-up.
Got little boys instead of little girls? How about turning that black satin number into Batman's cape or a red dress into Superman's cape? Superheroes are big on capes you know. The point is to be creative, have some fun and recycle that dress. You'll be glad you did.

The first thing that you will want to start with is your quinceanera dress. The reason behind this is simple, you want to know the color scheme that you will use for your quinceanera party. Also if you are going to have a Chambalan stand in your quinceanera, you want to know what color tuxedos your guys should order.
Quinceanera Invitations
One other aspect to consider is invitations. Order these early because you know us Hispanics, we do so much last minute. You want to make sure you send out your quinceanera invitation two months before your quince, the latest should be one month. Remember people have busy schedules and they want to attend but give them time to put it on their calendar. Plus you want them to have time to purchase a gift for you. Some will easy say they want to sponsor a piece of your quinceanera party.
Quinceanera Sponsors
Ask some of your family members first if they would be willing to sponsor one aspect of your quinceanera. Don't go overboard by asking hundreds but ask if they would put money towards your food budget or maybe your cake budget. You'd be surprised how many will want to give you money.
Quinceanera Music
If you are going to have a baile (dance) be sure you get a good DJ or a house band to play. These two options are the best and ask around for recommendations. Maricahi at a Quinceanera is always a hit. I had some at my wedding and everyone in the hotel that wasn't Hispanics was wishing they were because the music was so moving (Vicente's Volver Volver is a crowd favorite).

Attend other fifteens to see what other girls are doing. It's okay to be creative but don't go overboard. Remember to add that Mexican culture in your quinceanera. At the same time remember you will have 1st and 3rd generation Hispanics attend so don't make it all English or all Spanish, try to go Bilingual as much as you can at your quince.

You only turn 15 yrs old once so be sure to have a good time and don't worry if little things go wrong. Remember that having your quinceanera is about bring family together to celebrate your womanhood so let it be just that, a celebration.
